What is TED?

The non-profit organization of TED passionately believes in the power of ideas worth spreading, through the use of powerful and innovative speakers discussing a diverse range of topics. Being an acronym for Technology, Entertainment and Design, TED Talks aims to create a collaborative sphere of thinkers converging together to exchange their worldviews, thoughts and opinions freely. Sporting over 100 languages of awe-inspiring speeches from across the globe, TED Talks are on a quest to change attitudes, lives, and ultimately, the world.

What is TEDx?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBangkok, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBangkok event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

What are the differences between TED and TEDx?

TED events are events that are organized directly by TED Conferences LLC, New York, United States. TEDx events are events organized by the local community under license and guideline, but not organized, by TED Conferences LLC.

Does the same team organize all TEDx events?

No. There are different organizing teams and license holders that organize TEDx events independently from one another.

Why can’t I just buy a ticket? Why do I need to apply?

Due to the limited amount of seats available, we are thus obligated to select audience members. Since attending TEDx events provide the opportunity for individuals to explore cross-disciplinary topics, we make sure to pick a diverse ray of attendees, including - but not limited to- fields of arts, business, sciences and social studies etc. Therefore, it is crucial for us to get to know each and everyone of you according to the answers you have provided in your application.
With our highly-synchronized team, our selection process undoubtedly holds it in our best interest to make the selection a fair game. We make sure that all applications forms from everyone is read thoroughly and clearly. Although we reserve the right to make the final decisions, we openly welcome all suggestions to improve the selection process as well.

Can I get my friend to apply / buy tickets / attend the event for me?

No. For each ticket, you are required to provide us with a matching application that has been approved by our team. One ticket is for one person; no trading or giving it to other individuals.

Why can’t we know who the Speakers are before the event?

Announcing who will be speaking at the event beforehand goes against our priority of eliminating biases based on audiences only applying out of personal interest in specific speakers. By keeping the speakers anonymous at first, we are able to cater to audience members who are open and ready to consume a diverse ray of talks, regardless of who the speaker actually is. Thus, our team only announces our speakers when the date of the event is near.

Where does the income earned from the event go?

The income we earn from our ticket sales and sponsorships are spent on the venues, food, production, marketing, and speaker curation etc. Any profit or excess immediately goes into the fund to be spent on future TEDx events in the following years to come.
